give the best, not what's left
Between work, home, and social responsibilities, do you often feel that all your time is spent taking care of others? Finding time for self-care can be tough, neglecting self-care is far too easy in a busy world, but the consequences of not making time can be serious.
Scheduling in time for self-care has been shown to strengthen health and well-being as well help to lift mood.
Permission to Pause
Block out time in your diary for self-care. It’s not enough to occasionally stop your busy lifestyle and take a walk or indulge in a hot bath, self-care is an ongoing process. Just as you book other appointments, carve out some time to take care of yourself too. It can be anything really, such as a long bubble bath, getting your hair done, having a beauty treatment. Regular self-care habits can help avoid burnout, increase productivity, and increase enjoyment in life.
Be good to You
Spend time on your favorite hobby, whatever it maybe. If you already enjoy doing something, it is much easier to find time to do it! However, putting regular slots in your diary is still important to schedule it in as it shows that you are committed to your self-care. Fix a time to meet up with friends, book in a round of golf, find somewhere that you can read a book in peace and quiet. It may be that you like to go to the gym or do a class but life gets in the way. Book it in the diary just like any other appointment that you would not miss.
Take your power back
Declutter, whether its your wardrobe, your email account or your Facebook Friends list. Sorting through and removing what you don’t need will lift your spirits. Clutter and mess can be draining and overwhelming and keep you from moving forward. Remove the things that no longer serve a purpose for you, physically and mentally. Make room for new.
Kindle your own fire
Compliments are a great boost to self esteem, but once its happened, we can revert back to our previous state of mind. However, if you start making of note of these you can refer back to them at any time and get that boost again! Start a journal or keep a document where you can store them. Add things such as thank you cards, notes of praise at work, anything that will make you smile when you remember them. What this does is shift any negative thoughts into positive ones and is a great practice to get into. Its like creating your own affirmations.
Put your own mask on first
Self-care is not selfish, but sometimes it can feel that way. We feel that we must always put others first, whether its family or friends and that we need all our energy to do so. But sometimes we have to be a little selfish. You cannot pour from an empty cup. Do something at least once a week that is for you. It doesn’t have to be a big thing, but something that you can enjoy without feeling guilty. It can be as simple as having a cup of tea in the morning before sorting out everyone else. Saying no occasionally instead of always saying yes. Not answering your mobile every single time it rings.
