M Technique®

A deeply relaxing method of structured touch, using slow, gentle movements to create a sense of calm, comfort and stillness.

What is the M Technique?

The M Technique® is a method of structured touch developed by Dr Jane Buckle, a nurse and researcher.

Originally developed for use with critically ill patients, it offers an exceptionally gentle alternative for people who may find conventional massage unsuitable, uncomfortable or simply too much.

Unlike massage, the M Technique isn’t about manipulating muscles or working on areas of tension.

Instead, I use a specific sequence of slow, light movements. Each movement is repeated three times using consistent pressure and rhythm.

The predictability is an important part of the technique.

Once you know that nothing unexpected is coming, there’s very little for you to do other than get comfortable and allow yourself to switch off.

And sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Relaxing

Each movement is carried out at the same pressure, a set number of times, giving a feeling of profound relaxation.

Hypnotic

WW M Technique

The technique has been described as physical hypnotherapy, ‘a kind of meditation’ and a ‘spiritual dance’.

Gentle

The ‘M’ Technique is a gentle, structured touch method that allows the body to unwind.

Who is the M Technique For?

One of the things I love about the M Technique is just how gentle it is.

It can be particularly suitable for people who are:

  • living with illness or undergoing medical treatment
  • physically frail or sensitive to touch
  • experiencing fatigue
  • unable to tolerate conventional massage
  • feeling stressed or overwhelmed
  • looking for a very light, calming form of touch

But you certainly don’t need to be unwell to enjoy it.

You might simply prefer light touch to massage, find it difficult to switch off, or want some quiet time where absolutely nothing is expected of you.

A Different Kind of Touch

Touch can be incredibly comforting, but there are times when conventional massage isn’t appropriate or simply doesn’t appeal.

That’s where I think the M Technique is rather special.

It’s slow. It’s predictable. It’s incredibly light.

For someone who has spent a lot of time being examined, prodded, scanned, injected or treated medically, experiencing touch that asks absolutely nothing of you can feel very different.

And although the technique was developed with seriously ill people in mind, you don’t need a medical reason to choose it.

Sometimes you just want to be looked after for a while.

What Happens During a Session?

We’ll begin with a short consultation so that I understand how you’re feeling and can make sure the session is appropriate and comfortable for you.

The M Technique can be performed on different areas of the body, including the hands and feet, depending on your individual circumstances.

You remain comfortably positioned while I perform the sequence using very light, rhythmic movements.

There is no deep pressure and no massage of muscles.

You don’t need to talk.

You don’t need to meditate.

You don’t need to do anything.

You can simply close your eyes and enjoy the experience.

You can also choose to include Reiki energy healing for additional emotional and energetic support.

M Technique and Cancer

My own experiences of cancer treatment are one of the reasons this particular therapy means so much to me.

Cancer can involve an extraordinary amount of clinical touch. Your body can start to feel like something that’s constantly being examined, measured and treated rather than simply yours.

The M Technique offers something very different.

There are no machines, no procedures and nothing for you to achieve.

Just quiet, carefully structured touch and time to rest.

If you’re currently receiving cancer treatment or living with another medical condition, we’ll discuss your circumstances before your session so I can make sure the treatment is appropriate for you.
